Well, you know that part’s weird to me. What if they don’t? Or what if they do (even though I didn’t ask)? It’s also weird to me that there is no direct request to God for forgiveness because of what Christ has done for us (I can imagine it implied but sheep like me are stupid). Maybe I’m stuck in that guilt-grace-gratitude formula (pattern for most lutheran confessions)?

I will say this- it is very cool to me that the “general confession” is much more widespread than I thought at one time. Yeah, I’m ignorant about a lot of things :). The fundamentalists would do well to incorporate such a confession into their loose liturgies. The last 3 churches I was in (before this one) would’ve kicked you out for actually saying you were a SINNER every Sunday!!

“I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.”

And then we’ll follow it up (as you guys do, too) with some “Kyries” for good measure.

I do like the confession from the Lutheran liturgy mentioned in the blog post you linked to. Especially this part:

“Forgive us, renew us and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.”

If not for the hope of the latter part, the first would just be a dog biting at mortal wounds.
